Kindergarteners in Mrs. Harrison's class are working hard on mastering their pencil grip! Moving from a full-hand "fist grip" to a mature "tripod grip" (using the thumb, index, and middle finger) is a huge milestone that takes time, patience, and a whole lot of hand strength.
Want to help your little learner practice at home? Here are a few fun, low-prep ways to build those tiny hand muscles:
Pinch & Play: Playing with Play-Doh, squeezing clothespins, or picking up small items with child-safe tweezers.
Break the Crayons: Shorter or broken crayons naturally force kids to use their fingertips instead of their whole hand!
Snap & Pop: Popping bubble wrap or snapping together small Legos.
The "Pinch and Flip" Trick: Have your child pinch the pencil right near the eraser side, then flip it over so it rests softly on their hand.
Remember, every child develops at their own pace. Encourage their efforts, celebrate the progress, and make fine-motor play part of your daily routine!
